Abby Gail is convinced that Yorkie is perfectly easy to understand. A YIP means something. A stare means something. Running to the door, back to a Hooman, and then to the door again definitely means something.

Why do the Hoomans keep asking,“What do you want?”

Clearly, more training is required.

So Abby Gail begins putting her Hoomans through a series of lessons. There are door lessons, squeaky-toy tests, treat translations, suspicious stares, and one very important final exam. Daddy Harley helps by singing his announcements, while Mommy Lilly demonstrates that an “inside voice” works perfectly well until another bird or butterfly appears.

But the world outside Abby Gail’s house has languages of its own.

There’s Tihs Daeh, the enormous white wolf dog who considers himself the Yorkies’ babysitter and family protector. Pickles speaks Chihuahua, which Abby Gail finds surprisingly difficult to translate. Mattie is a “designer dog,” although nobody will explain exactly what she designs. Buck spends most of his time running, Precious would rather not get her beautiful white feet dirty, and Peanut is Abby Gail’s favorite little Yorkie sidekick for adventures that are absolutely, positively not their fault.

As Abby Gail’s lessons continue, something strange begins happening.

The Hoomans understand things she never remembers teaching them.

They know when Harley is announcing something important. They know when Lilly wants a scratch. They recognize Abby Gail’s door signals. Sometimes they even know what Abby wants before she finishes explaining it.
